Being proactive and protecting your home against termites before they appear is the best way to prevent damage.

Are you trying to figure out if termites are invading your home? Keep reading to learn about the top signs of termites being in your home.

  1. Wings

If you start to notice little piles of wings around your windows, doors, or even outside of your home this can be an indication of termites. Each year, around springtime, groups of termites called warmers leave their nest to mate and start new colonies.

Once they have landed, they discard their wings since they will no longer be needing them. So beware if you notice pairs of wings popping up, or if you see antlike creatures with wings flying around your home.

This is one of the first signs that new colonies are starting to form.

  1. Wood Damage

Another clear sign of termites is if you start to notice damage to the wood in your walls or flooring. This damage can range from visible grooves where the termites have been eating to wood that sounds hollow when you tap it.

Termites tend to eat wood from the inside out, so if you are able to see the damage then you have likely had a termite infestation for a while and it is time to seek termite treatment.

  1. Mud Tubes

Look around the outside of your home for signs of termites like mud tubes. These will often start on the ground and connect to your home or any other wooden structure.

Different types of termites nest in different ways and subterranean termites love to nest underground. They form tunnels to help maintain a moist environment in which they thrive.

  1. Frass

Frass is a form of termite droppings most associated with dry wood termites. These pests actually nest inside of the wood and eat their way through, kicking out their droppings through little holes.

If you have this type of termite you will find little piles of frass, which will look like tiny wood collared pellets.

  1. Bubbling Paint

Often when we notice bubbling paint we immediately think this signals water damage. While this can be true, bubbling paint can also be a sign of termites. This is because subterranean termites need moisture to survive.

As the colonies grow within the wood, so does the moisture which can lead to peeling or bubbling paint.
