What is Epoxy Flooring?

Epoxy terrazzo is low-maintenance and could last up to 40 years, making it a top choice for large commercial venues. However, they require the expertise of a professional Flooring Contractor to ensure a seamless installation. This is especially important in commercial settings to reduce the chances of anyone tripping and falling.

However, resin flooring can be a complicated topic; many are having doubts about the epoxy floor’s nuances and fundamentals.

So, in this article, you will learn more about this type of flooring and common types of epoxy flooring.

Epoxy flooring: explained

Epoxy flooring is one of the synthetic resin floor system types, laid on top of concrete for protection and decoration.

The system could have several layers of thermosetting resin that are poured, coated, or troweled, and typically applied on a concrete substrate.

Once cured, the epoxy floor system becomes a durable and permanent bond, working as an impenetrable and fancy barrier, protecting the substrate.

Epoxy is the most commonly used resin technology due to its good chemical and mechanical resistance properties.

This type of resin flooring can also be customized into a wide variety of aesthetic options.

When it comes to aesthetic, epoxy floorings are versatile and come in a wide selection of styles, colors, decorative options, and effects. Below are the primary ranges of epoxy floorings.

Epoxy terrazzo

This type of epoxy flooring offers a durable, seamless, and decorative flooring surface. Selected aggregates such as glass, marble, or granite, with a mix of coloured epoxy, create epoxy terrazzo flooring.

Once the mixture has set, the flooring is ground and polished to expose the aggregate, providing a decorative, smooth, and tough floor finish.

Epoxy terrazzo are low-maintenance and could last up to 40 years, making it top choice for large commercial venues.

Epoxy flake coatings

This flooring is made with different flakes that are sprinkled over a colored epoxy base and finished with a durable, resistant sealer. It offers a decorative floor finish that is resistant to chemicals and foot traffic, and easy to clean.

Epoxy flake coating is best for showrooms, shops, schools, and restaurants among a wide range of commercial venues.

Epoxy floor coating

This is also known as epoxy paint. It has a single color with a glossy, matte, or satin finish.

This flooring type is typically used for areas with light to moderate activity levels and can also be used for commercial and industrial areas.

If you choose this type of epoxy flooring, you must speak with a flooring specialist to have the beast-matched flooring.

A suitable flooring solution depends on the area’s function and purpose to meet the flooring requirements.

Self-leveling epoxy

This type of epoxy flooring has self-smoothing properties when poured on the substrate.

Self-leveling epoxy flooring systems are commonly applied between 1-3mm and spread in liquid form for easy installation, giving it a seamless and smooth finish.

It has a resin-rich formula that can provide a very durable finish, best for the environment with a high activity level.

Epoxy screeds

Epoxy screeds are usually used as a heavy-duty underlayment to create various resin floors, such as self-leveling epoxy coatings or anti-slip coatings.

The screed’s typical thickness is 4-6mm, making it a thicker layer. A trowel is used to apply the screed and could be power-floated for a smooth, level finish.

Epoxy resin flooring systems are a durable and low-maintenance solution if professional applicators install them.
